Leading UK salmon supplier enhances factory safety with projected signage

The UK’s largest supplier of farm-raised salmon – MOWI Scotland – has improved safety in their food production facilities with innovative projected health and safety signs from Projected Image.

MOWI Scotland faced challenges with applying and maintaining clear, durable signage in their cold, wet environments with heavy foot traffic and large pallets, so sought a health and safety signage solution better suited to their facilities.

Newcastle-based Projected Image specialises in LED projectors that cast bright, high-visibility safety signs onto any surface, ideal for demanding conditions in food production facilities.

Projected Image created projected safety zones and ‘keep clear’ signage for MOWI Scotland, helping the business avoid the challenges associated with painted and printed signage in cold, wet environments.

“As MOWI Scotland’s facilities include cold storage areas, a key requirement was a signage solution which could withstand low temperatures as well as be easily applied in a wet environment.

Our projector units can be used in temperatures between -20ºc and 50ºc. Plus, their IP rating means they can be used in wet conditions too, making them the perfect solution for MOWI Scotland” says Ian Spoors, Managing Director of Projected Image.

According to Projected Image, many food production facilities have areas of cold, wet storage in which painted and printed signs often struggle to adhere or remain visible.

Applying traditional signs can be difficult as printed or painted signage requires wet areas to be fully dried before application, causing disruption to operations. It also makes ongoing maintenance - like repainting - more challenging and time-consuming.

“One of the main issues which needed resolving for MOWI Scotland was that wet areas needed to be dried before applying printed or painted signs. Projected signs don’t require the area to be dried in order to be applied or used. So, they not only reduce the need for ongoing maintenance, but also provide a long-term safety solution without major interruptions to the production line" adds Ian.

MOWI Scotland also required safety signage which would display ‘keep clear’ zones in their factory, including wet rooms, whilst minimising cross-contamination risk and remaining bright and easily visible after thorough cleaning.

Projected Image says traditional signage in food and drink production facilities can pose contamination risks, wear quickly or fade in regularly cleaned environments – which are all challenges projected signage can minimise.

“Managing contamination risk is vital for MOWI Scotland, and our projected signs don’t produce contaminants – like paint chips – which could get into food products. Plus, they don’t harbour bacteria or fade or wear, even with regular cleaning” says Ian.

Projected Image have been a leader in projection technology for over 25 years and are the country's only dedicated provider of both LED projectors and the gobos used within them.

“The projected signage we deliver is bright, consistent, hard-to-ignore – and very well-suited to food production facilities!” concludes Ian.
